Amanda Moore McBride, PhD
Director, Gephardt Institute for Public Service

Appointed by the Chancellor as Director of the Gephardt Institute in 2006, Dr. Amanda Moore McBride provides leadership and strategic direction for all aspects of the Institute’s development. She utilizes her expertise in civic engagement and service to guide operations and initiatives and chairs the steering committee.
 
As an Assistant Professor at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work, Dr. McBride also teaches classes on social justice, program evaluation, and social work practice with organizations and communities. She researches and writes on national and international issues related to civic engagement and civic service, such as service learning, national service, and international volunteering. Her research focuses on inclusion issues, global citizenship, and youth service as youth development.
 
She was lead editor of a 2004 special issue of Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, entitled “Toward a Global Research Agenda on Civic Service,” a 2005 issue of Voluntary Action, entitled “International Service in the Context of Globalization,” and a 2007 book with ME Sharpe, entitled “Civic Service Worldwide: Impacts and Inquiry.” She is also the immediate-past associate editor of the journal, Social Development Issues.
 
Dr. McBride additionally serves as the research director of the Center for Social Development, managing an international civic service research fellows program with partners in over 30 countries.
 
She earned her undergraduate degree from Hendrix College and went on to earn her M.S.W. and Ph.D. at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in 1995 and 2003 respectively.

Stephanie Kurtzman has overseen the Community Service Office since 1998. The Office serves as a catalyst for students to build and sustain meaningful service initiatives in partnership with the region. Stephanie founded Service First, Each One Teach One, the Gerry and Bob Virgil Ethic of Service Award, the Social Change Grants program, and University-wide blood drives.
 
The Community Service Office oversees Leadership Through Service in St. Louis, Wellston Summer School, the Service Trip Coordinating Council, the Graduate & Professional Student Steering Committee, and the Community Service Network, and advises multiple community service student groups. Stephanie is also an advisor in Arts & Sciences.
 
Stephanie earned her master’s degree from The University of Vermont in Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration, and bachelor's degree in Psychology at Occidental College. Prior to graduate school, she worked on a kibbutz in Israel. She is a California native, and enjoys cooking and time with her family, friends, and two dogs.
 
 
Robin Hattori

Robin Hattori worked at the University’s Career Center and Undergraduate Admissions prior to joining the Institute. She manages the daily operations of the Institute, as well as plans and implements programs related to civic engagement, often in collaboration with others.
 
Most of her experience centers on programming, development, and communications. She coordinated international relations for the local government in Japan, and worked locally at nonprofits such as Progressive Youth Center and FOCUS St. Louis. Robin graduated from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University with a degree in East Asian Studies. She earned a master's degree in Non-Profit Management from Washington University in St. Louis.
 
Robin serves on the board of the Campus Y and Central Institute for the Deaf and is the advisor of the Heisei Japan Club. She regularly volunteers with the Asian community and the St. Louis Japanese Festival. Shortly after September 11th, she took a year off to travel to 16 countries on her honeymoon, and received unforgettable goodwill from strangers around the world.
 
 
 
Jenni L. Harpring, MSW, MAPS

Jenni Harpring coordinates the Goldman Fellows program, international service-learning programs and community-based teaching and learning initiatives for the Gephardt Institute.
 
Jenni has been involved in service and service-learning domestically and internationally and has experience on five continents. Prior to graduate school she was the program manager for an organization working to include immigrants as experts in setting priorities for service delivery in their community. She studied the impacts of international service and education as part of both of her graduate programs.
 
Jenni earned her M.S.W. from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University, Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies from Eden Theological Seminary, and her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Calvin College. She travels as often as possible and enjoys cooking, reading, the outdoors, and exploring theology, spirituality, and the meaning of life.

Tammy A. Cavarretta
Senior Associate Director of Development for University Initiatives

Tammy Cavarretta coordinates fund raising efforts, volunteer and Advisory Council activities, as well as collaborates closely with the Gephardt Institute’s team on outreach and communication.
 
Tammy joined the Alumni & Development team at Washington University in June 2012 as the Senior Associate Director of Development for University Initiatives, which includes the Gephardt Institute for Public Service.
 
She has over 15 years of alumni and development and 14 years of new student recruitment and academic scholarship administration experience. Prior to WUSTL, she was Director of Development for the College of Business at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). Tammy has a master’s in business administration from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and a bachelor's in speech communication/public relations from SIUC.

NICOLE DUREL                                                                                                                           Program Coordinator, Gephardt Institute and Olin Business School

Starting at the Institute in the summer of 2011, Nicole coordinates community-based teaching and learning initiatives and works with the Olin Business School to implement the Olin Outreach course.  She also adminsters the Community Counts service inventory and the faculty grants program. As a liaison between the University and the community, Nicole works on developing partnerships with community-based organizations in order to facilitate short-term and long-term service initiatives.

Before coming to the University, Nicole taught students with learning and developmental disabilities, and coordinated a school-wide community service program in K-12 schools. Nicole then joined the University in 2009, working at the Olin Business School.

Nicole earned her M.S.W. from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work and M.B.A. from Olin Business School at Washington University, and B.S. in Education from Miami University in Ohio. As a social work practicum student, Nicole worked at Nonprofit Services Center and Urban Strategies, Inc. She is a St. Louis native and enjoys yoga, dance and spending time with her family.

ROBIN ‘Kitty’ CONROY

Robin, who goes by her nickname “Kitty”, worked as an administrative assistant with the University’s Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research prior to joining the Gephardt team in 2011. She provides administrative support for the Institute’s daily functions and handles coordination and marketing for meetings, special events and programs. Kitty plans and supports programs such as: St. Louis Up Close, the Women’s Club Meet the Leaders, Pop in for Public Service, Government Days with the University’s Career Center, Faces of Hope, and Planet Passport with the McDonnell International Scholars Academy. 


Kitty’s previous work experience centers on organization, communication and coordination skills. She was a gallery director, office manager and receptionist at the St. Louis Artists’ Guild, a legal assistant with Mogab & Hughes, secretary for the St. Louis Public Defenders Office, and a social worker at Children’s Home and Aid Society of Illinois (CHASI).


Kitty graduated from Southwest Illinois College, Belleville, Illinois. She holds an Associate of Applied Science in Administration of Justice. She is a St. Louis native, and enjoys camping, swimming and oil painting.

Scott D. Ward
Executive Director of Development for University Initiatives

Scott provides fundraising leadership for Washington University’s primary university-wide initiatives and interdisciplinary centers and institutes. At the Gephardt Institute for Public Service he coordinates fund raising efforts and collaborates with the Institute’s team on outreach and communication.
Scott came to Washington University in October 2007 and served as Senior Director of Capital Projects. He provided leadership and direction of fundraising initiatives for new facilities such as the Danforth University Center and served as part of the Alumni & Development team providing direction for university-wide strategic planning and dedications of the Danforth University Center and Seigle Hall.
 
He began his career in academic advancement at the University of Kentucky where he served as Executive Director of Development of the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Foundation and Interim Director of Development for the Chandler Medical Center. Scott also served on the senior development leadership team at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he directed a $200 million capital campaign that reached its goal two years ahead of schedule.
 
Scott received a BA in Political Science and a PhD in Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation/Studies in Higher Education from the University of Kentucky.
