The Gephardt Institute Civic Engagement Fund Committee awarded several grants to goups of students in its first funding cycle in October. The following recipients will receive funding support from the Institute for their projects and technical support as needed:
- Organized by the Campus Y, this two-week trip to Cape Town, South Africa, will enable up to 25 participants to serve as health eduators at HIV testing sites and orphanages.
- Organized by students of Spanish language, this spring trip will emphasize cultural exchange be facilitating communication between elementary school students in rural Costa Rica and St. Louis Hispanic youth. Washington U. students will also do use basic construction skills to do repairs at the Costa Rican school.
- This winter break trip to Jamaica is organized by the Campus Y in coordination with International Orphanage Relief. Students will return for a second year to work at a severely understaffed orphanage for boys.
- This collaboration between the Annika Rodriguez Scholars Program, Assocation of Latin American Students, Campus Y, and Washington University Office of Undergraduate Admissions will replicate a highly succesful model of Washington U. students presenting college admissions information to underserved students in Brownsville, TX.
- This short trip was organized by the American Indian Student Association, Buder Center for American Indian Studies, and the George Warren Brown School of Social Work Student Coordinating Council. The grant funds a healthy breakfast and nutrition discussion led by Master's of Social Work students for children and families of the Pawnee Nation.
- led by students in Swahili Classes 103, 203, and Literature, this program assists Burundian refugees who have resettled in the St. Louis area. The Grant provides dictionaries for the families so that they have a resource to improve their English language skills.
