U.S. President Recognizes the University’s Community Service

For the second year in a row, Washington University was named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth.

Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll constitutes the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for commitment to civic engagement. Selection factors included scope and innovativeness of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.

The Gephardt Institute for Public Service compiled data from schools across the University to submit the application. It highlighted such signature service initiatives as Relay for Life, Service First, Each One Teach One, Engineers Without Borders, and the Annika Rodriguez Scholars Program’s College Connections – Wellston Collaborative.

Thr Corporation for National and Community Service implements the Honor Roll. This federal agency seeks to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. The Corporation administers Senior Corps, AmeriCorps and Learn and Serve America, a program that supports service-learning in schools, institutions of higher education and community-based organizations.  For more information, go to www.nationalservice.gov.
